On 17 April 2025, H.E. Mr. Maris Sangiampongsa, Minister of Foreign Affairs, joined Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra in welcoming Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Malaysia, at the Government House on the occasion of the latter’s Working Visit to Thailand during 17 - 18 April 2025.

Both sides witnessed the exchange of the Agreement between the Government of the Kingdom of Thailand and the Government of Malaysia Relating to the Construction of the Second Bridge and the Upgrading of the Existing Bridge Linking Su-Ngai Kolok, Narathiwat, Thailand and Rantau Panjang, Kelantan. This exchange of Agreement not only symbolizes the enduring friendship between Thailand and Malaysia, but also serves to stimulate economic development in the border areas, contributing to the bilateral trade target of 30 billion USD by 2027.

In addition, the two Prime Ministers discussed various important areas for cooperation, such as in energy security and the prevention and elimination of online scams. They also reaffirmed the commitment to fostering sustainable peace and inclusive socio-economic development, particularly in the Southern Border Provinces (SBPs) of Thailand and the Northern states of Malaysia, through the Peace Dialogue Process in Thailand’s SBPs. Both sides agreed on the importance of reducing violence in the area and promoting local economic development as a foundation for long-term stability and prosperity for the peoples of both nations.

On regional cooperation, Thailand reaffirmed its full support for Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025. The two leaders also exchanged views on the situation in Myanmar, the international trade environment, and the importance of promoting ASEAN unity and regional economic cooperation amid increasing global uncertainties, to jointly address the issues most effectively.

This visit is a significant step in elevating bilateral cooperation in a tangible manner for the mutual benefit of both countries and the region.
