On 5 September 2024, Mrs. Eksiri Pintaruchi, Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, welcomed and had a discussion with H.E. Mr. Paolo Dionisi, Ambassador of Italy to Thailand, who paid a courtesy call on the Permanent Secretary.
Both sides discussed ways to advance bilateral cooperation, including defense industry, silk industry cooperation, Thailand’s Landbridge Project and diplomat exchanges. The discussion also touched upon the preparation of the 3rd Thailand-Italy Political Consultations at the level of the Permanent Secretary of Foreign Affairs, the preparation of the official visit to Thailand of H.E. Ms. Giorgia Meloni, President of the Council of Ministers of Italy, in February 2025, and an Action Plan in sectors of high potential.
Thailand and Italy have had longstanding bilateral relations, which span over 156 years since the establishment of the diplomatic relations on 3 October 1868, with several areas of cooperation including economy, education, tourism, social and culture. In addition, on 1 July 2024, Thai Airways International Public Co. Ltd. launched a new direct flight route between Bangkok and Milan, Italy, with an aim to strengthen relationships in the tourism aspect.
