On 8 December 2025, H.E. Mr. Sihasak Phuangketkeow, Minister of Foreign Affairs, welcomed H.E. Mr. Carlos Ramiro Martínez Alvarado, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Guatemala, during his official visit to Thailand. They signed the MoU on the Establishment of the Political Consultations Mechanism and witnessed the signing of the Letter of Intent, paving the way for the negotiations of an MoU on Technical Cooperation. These two documents mark significant steps toward advancing concrete cooperation between Thailand and Guatemala, especially as the two countries will commemorate the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2027.

In this occasion, H.E. Mr. Vijavat Isarabhakdi, Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs, had a discussion with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Guatemala, discussing ways to strengthen cooperation in various areas of mutual interest, including high-level exchanges and dialogues, trade and investment, people-to-people ties, tourism and visa facilitation, and technical cooperation. They also discussed South-South cooperation and collaboration in multilateral fora, as well as exchanged views on regional and international issues. Thailand proposed to host the inaugural Meeting of Political Consultations in 2026 which will provide an opportunity to discuss ways to further expand cooperation. In addition, the Vice Minister also provided an update on the Thailand - Cambodia situation and expressed appreciation for the letter of condolences from the Government of Guatemala on the passing of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother. The Guatemalan Foreign Minister also signed the condolence book and laid the floral tribute in the afternoon.

Thailand and Guatemala established diplomatic relations on 7 March 1957. The two countries cooperate in trade, culture, and technical and multilateral collaborations. Guatemala is Thailand’s ninth-largest trading partner in Latin America. In 2024, bilateral trade amounted to 176.55 million USD.
