On 9 December 2025, Mrs. Eksiri Pintaruchi, Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, had a discussion with Mr. Hunt VanderToll, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Southeast Asia and ASEAN Affairs, Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs, U.S. Department of State, on the occasion of the latter’s visit to Thailand during 8 - 10 December 2025. Also in attendance were senior representatives from the Ministry of Defense, the National Security Council, and the Thailand Mine Action Center.

The Permanent Secretary shared the latest information on the Thailand - Cambodia border situation since the incident on 10 November 2025, in which a Thai soldier stepped on a landmine proven to be newly laid by Cambodia, as well as the latest attacks initiated by Cambodia that have forced Thailand to respond in order to protect national sovereignty, territorial integrity and safety of the people. She also stressed that Thailand’s operations are in line with the principles of necessity, proportionality, and international humanitarian law. The U.S. side expressed understanding of Thailand’s situation and, as an ally, expressed condolences for the deaths and losses of Thai soldiers and the impacts on the Thai people. The Permanent Secretary underscored that Thailand has to continue undertaking necessary measures to safeguard national sovereignty, territorial integrity and safety of the Thai people until attempts to undermine Thailand’s sovereignty and territorial integrity by Cambodia ends.

The U.S. side reaffirmed the longstanding alliance between Thailand and the U.S. and wished for the Thailand - Cambodia conflict to be resolved, while standing ready to enhance cooperation with Thailand in various areas, especially combating online scams and humanitarian demining.
