Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia paid an Official Visit to Thailand

On 19 January 2019, H.E. Mr. Don Pramudwinai, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand, held bilateral discussions with H.E. Dato’ Saifuddin Abdullah, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia, on the occasion of the latter’s Official Visit to Thailand during 18 - 19 January 2019.

Both Foreign Ministers were pleased with the current state of Thai - Malaysian close relations that have progressed with greater dynamism after to the Official Visit of Tun Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad, Prime Minister of Malaysia, to Thailand during 24 - 25 October 2018.

Thailand and Malaysia agreed to extend the working hours of Sadao Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Checkpoint (CIQ) in Thailand and Bukit Kayu Hitam Immigration, Customs, Quarantine, Security Checkpoint (ICQS) in Malaysia to 24 hours for a three-month trial period, starting from 1 April 2019. The extension of working hours will facilitate the cross-border movement of goods and increase trade volume between Thailand and Malaysia, benefiting  business entrepreneurs and peoples along the borders of the two countries.

Thailand urged Malaysia to consider the proposal to construct a one-kilometre road connecting the new CIQ Sadao Checkpoint with the ICQS Bukit Kayu Hitam Checkpoint to help enhance seamless connectivity between southern Thailand and the Penang deep sea port in Malaysia.

Malaysia reiterated its support for Thailand’s role in promoting sustainable development as the Chair of ASEAN, especially on the establishment of the ASEAN Centre for Sustainable Development Studies and Dialogue (ACSDSD) in Thailand this year. Malaysia attaches great importance to sustainable development and has incorporated the said approach into its 11th National Development Plan (2016 - 2020). Thailand and Malaysia will continue to discuss ways to promote cooperation in this area.

Thailand expressed its readiness to host the 14th Meeting of Thailand - Malaysia Joint Commission in June 2019 while Malaysia reaffirmed its commitment to host the 7th Annual Consultation which will be co-chaired by the Prime Ministers of Thailand and Malaysia later this year.
