On 25 November 2015, H.E. Mr. Vitavas Srivihok, Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, and H.E. Mr. Alfredo Labbé-Villa, Director-General for Foreign Policy, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Chile, co-chaired the Fourth Political Consultations between the Kingdom of Thailand and the Republic of Chile in Bangkok.
The two sides exchanged views on various issuess of common interests; including the political and economic situations of both countries; ways to expand bilateral cooperation in a wide range of areas covering trade and investment, agriculture, technical cooperation, education, sport, science, technology and innovation. They also discussed cooperation at the regional and multilateral levels, under the frameworks of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the Forum for the East Asia and Latin America Cooperation (FEALAC), the Pacific Alliance, and the G 77.
The Thai and Chilean delegations expressed satisfication that the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the two countries has entered into force since 5 November 2015 and agreed to encourage their private sectors to utilize the FTA through building networks and increasing exchange of visits between peoples and businesses of the two countries.
Afterwards, the Chilean Director-General for Foreign Policy paid a courtesy call on H.E. Mr. Don Pramudwinai, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand.
Thailand and Chile established their diplomatic relations on 29 October 1962. Both sides have enjoyed close and cordial relations over the past 53 years, marked by several exchanges of high-level visits, as well as strong people-to-people relations. The Fifth Political Consultations between the Kingdom of Thailand and the Republic of Chile will tentatively be held in Chile in 2017.
