On 22 April 2015, the Royal Thai Embassy, in collaboration with Mercado Roma and “La Ahumadora” Restaurant, successfully held the Opening Night of Thai Food Festival at Mercado Roma – a vibrant and modern food market in the heart of Mexico City, attracting over 100 guests from the media, cooking schools and the hotels and restaurants sectors.

H.E. Surasak  Chuasukonthip, Ambassador of Thailand, and Mr. Alberto Sacal, Owner of Mercado Roma, jointly presided the Inaugural Ceremony. Then, Mrs. Ruchira  Chuasukonthip, Ambassador’s wife, gave a cooking demonstration of “Grilled Shrimp Curry with Mixed Fruit”, followed by the demonstration of “Yam Talay” or Thai Style Seafood Salad by Chef Srichai Pangsri (“Bangkok” Restaurant) and Chef Suphannee Somthaisong (“Pad Thai” Restaurant). Chef Daniel Frydman, owner of “La Ahumadora” Restaurant and Co-host of the Festival, also showed his style of Thai cooking of “Tom Kha Che” (Galangar and Cocounut Milk Soup with Vegetables), while Ambassador’s Staff performed fruit carving, attracting great interest from the audience.

Throughout the evening, many Thai dishes and drinks were served, including the Thai beer “SINGHA” sponsored by the importer KUME.

During the Thai Food Festival Month which will last until 20 May, “La Ahumadora” is offering a special Thai menu to their customers everyday. Highlight is on each Saturday Night when Chef Srichai will be the invited Chef to cook Thai famous dishes in front of avid food lovers of Mercado Roma, with an aim to create greater awareness of Thai cuisine in Mexico.
