On 8 July 2013, H.E. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs made the following statement to the Press:
Thailand and Egypt have long-standing and close political, economic and people-to-people relations. Thailand attaches great importance to Egypt as a key player in the Middle East and Africa.
Thailand therefore expresses grave concern at the recent developments in Egypt, where the situation is still uncertain and violent incidents have led to loss of lives.
From Thailand’s own experience, we believe that any political transition undertaken through undemocratic means will not bring about a durable solution; this requires a spirit of reconciliation and solidarity among all parties concerned.
Thailand therefore cannot support nor agree with a military intervention or any unconstitutional means as a way to resolve political conflicts in a democracy.
As an upholder of democratic values, Thailand calls on all parties concerned in Egypt to work together to find the ways and means to restore democracy. We hope that the appointment of an interim President will lead to a civilian government and elections in order to minimize disruption to the democratic process. Thailand believes that a legitimate government can only come from free and fair elections by the people.
