On 4 December 2024, the Royal Thai Embassy in Lisbon hosted a reception on the auspicious occasion of the Birthday Anniversary of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great, National Day, and Thai Father’s Day at Tivoli Hotel, Lisbon. The reception was attended by 150 distinguished guests including members of diplomatic corps, representatives from Portuguese government sector and local authorities, private sector, academic sector, Thai community and Friends of Thailand.
Ms. Supapan Tiapiriyakij, Chargé d'affaires, a.i., delivered an opening remarks before proposing a toast to His Majesty the King King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua and His Excellency Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, President of the Portuguese Republic. In the remarks, the Chargé d'affaires, a.i.,paid tribute to His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great for His Majesty’s long-lasting legacy and dedication to the Nation. December 5th has been designated by the United Nations as the World Soil Day in recognition of His Majesty’s contribution to the field of sustainable development. The Chargé d'affaires, a.i. emphasized the 513 years of Thai – Portuguese friendship, whereby Portugal is the first European Nation that made contact with Thailand. Noting this enduring friendship and exchange of people-to-people contact and culture that can be witnessed living proofs in Thailand and Portugal, Thailand reaffirms its commitment to strengthening cooperation with Portugal in all dimensions especially through convening the 3rd Political Consulations and promoting Partnership for Development with Portugal at trilateral level. Thailand pledges to play a constructive role in multilateralism and extends its gratitude to Portugal for support of Thailand’s UN HRC membership for the term of 2024-2025. At the event, Chargé d'affaires, a.i. also announced that Tomyum Kung which will be catered to the reception was recently inscribed on UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
In the event, the Embassy promoted Soft Power of Thailand and showcased Thai fruit carving and Thai authentic foods from Thai restaurants which attain Thai Select Logo i.e. Tomyum Kung by Baan Saraiva’s restaurant, Pad Thai by Sala Thai restaurant and Thai fish cakes from Siam Square restaurant. Popular Thai authentic desserts were presented including Khaoniew Ma-Maung, together with Thai desserts with Portuguese influence such as Look Choop and Med Kanoon by Conzinha da Bow as well as Chicken Curry Puffs and Been Puffs by Kidtueng Kanom Thai. The Embassy also served Thai herbal Coktails : Pad Thai and Tomyum flavour by Siam Square restaurant.
