On 7 November 2022, Miss Acharapan Yavaprapas, Consul-General of Thailand in Kolkata, presided over the Kathina Chibar Dana (gifting of Kathina robes) Ceremony as chief guest at Wat Thai Gayaviriya Temple, Kolkata. The Ceremony was organised by Venerable Gayanalankar Bhikkhu, Founder and General Secretary of Geyanalankar Buddhist Sangha Society and attended by senior Buddhist monks from several countries including Thailand, India and Bangladesh as well as hundreds participants from local communities.
Venerable Gayanalankar Bhikkhu gave sermon on the significance and merits of Kathina, which was sanctioned by Lord Buddha so that the monks who have completed their retreat during the rainy season could be replenished with proper robes on this occasion once a year, and that the gifting of Kathina robes is particularly meritorious since they are given to collective groups of Sangha, not any specific individual monks. Consul-General of Thailand underscored the importance of Kathina for Thai monarchs who would appoint his representatives to offer royal Kathina robes to Buddhist temples in Thailand and other countries every year even during the COVID-19 pandemic and thus serve a valuable tradition that helps cultivating cordial relations between Buddhist communities in Thailand and other countries.
Wat Thai Gayaviriya Temple was established in 2001 byVenerable Gayanalankar Bhikkhu who had spent 14 years in studying Thai Buddhist practice at Wat Thai Dhammamongkol Temple in Bangkok. Moreover, on 7 November 2016, Wat Thai Gayaviriya Temple received royal Kathina robes from His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great delivered by Mr. Norachit Sinhaseni, former Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs.
