On 8–9 June 2026, H.E. Mr. Sihasak Phuangketkeow, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, accompanied H.E. Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior of Thailand, on his Official Visit to the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam.

The visit marked Prime Minister Anutin’s first official visit to Viet Nam. It coincides with the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Viet Nam this year. The visit builds upon the Official Visit to Thailand by H.E. Mr. To Lam, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Viet Nam and President of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam, on 27–28 May 2026. Accompanying the Prime Minister on this visit are eight Deputy Prime Ministers and Ministers, as well as the Chief of Defence Forces and the Commanders of all branches of the Thai Armed Forces. This reflects the close relationship and shared commitment of both governments to advancing the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in a concrete and meaningful manner.

During the visit, the Prime Minister held bilateral talk with H.E. Mr. Le Minh Hung, Prime Minister of Viet Nam, and paid courtesy calls on H.E. Mr. To Lam, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Viet Nam and President of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam, and H.E. Mr. Tran Thanh Man, Chairman of the National Assembly of Viet Nam. He also attended the opening ceremony and delivered remarks at the 3rd ASEAN Future Forum.

In their discussion, the Prime Ministers of both sides reaffirmed the importance of advancing bilateral cooperation mechanisms at all levels, particularly the Joint Cabinet Retreat (JCR), the Joint Commission on Bilateral Cooperation (JCBC) and the Joint Trade Committee (JTC). The Thai Prime Minister also extended an invitation to his Vietnamese counterpart to pay an Official Visit to Thailand, as both sides mark the 50th Anniversary of Thailand–Viet Nam diplomatic relations.

On security cooperation, both sides agreed to elevate defence cooperation. During the visit, the Defence Ministers of both countries also held a separate discussion. Notably, this was the first time that the commanders of all branches of the armed forces participated in such an engagement.

On economic cooperation both sides agreed to work towards a new and more ambitious bilateral trade target of between 30 – 50 billion USD, and to enhance cooperation in agricultural trade. The Thai Prime Minister requested continued support from the Vietnamese side for Thai businesses operating in Viet Nam and encouraged greater Vietnamese investment in Thailand to promote a more balanced investment relationship between the two countries.

Both sides agreed to further deepen economic cooperation across all sectors, guided by the shared vision of transforming competition into partnership for mutual growth. Building on the Three Connects Strategy, they committed to developing integrated value chains through enhanced connectivity in supply chains, local economies and the green economy. They also agreed to strengthen cooperation in science, technology and innovation, which are essential drivers of the future economy.

The two sides exchanged views on regional developments. The Thai side briefed Viet Nam on recent developments concerning the Thailand–Cambodia situation. Both sides underscored the importance of promoting greater engagement between Myanmar and ASEAN, in line with the approach advocated by Thailand.

The Prime Minister also met with representatives of the Thai private sector in Viet Nam to exchange views on enhancing Thailand–Viet Nam economic cooperation. He witnessed the exchange of two business cooperation agreements between leading companies from both countries. In addition, he attended the Thailand–Viet Nam Investment and Business Networking 2026 event, which provided an opportunity for businesses from both sides to strengthen their networks and partnerships. On this occasion, the Prime Minister encouraged leading Vietnamese companies to expand their investments in Thailand.
