On 18 January 2024, H.E. Mr. Sarun Charoensuwan, Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, attended the public opening of the “Weaving Our Stories” Exhibition on the occasion of the 190th anniversary of Thai-U.S. diplomatic relations, hosted by the U.S. Embassy in Thailand, at the Bangkok Art & Culture Centre (BACC).
On this occasion, the Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, delivered the opening remarks, along with Ambassador Robert F. Godec, U.S. Ambassador to Thailand, and Ms. Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya, the Thai-American artist and creator of “Time Owes Us Remembrance,” the art masterpiece at the exhibition. The Permanent Secretary underscored that the exhibition marks a historic moment for Thai-U.S. relations as Their Majesties the King and Queen of Thailand graciously presided over the official opening ceremony on 17 January 2024, signifying the close and special connection between Thailand and the United States. The art installation symbolizes the interconnected ties between the two nations and peoples, based on shared values, which continue to grow across all levels and sectors, from the past, present, and into the future.
The “Weaving Our Stories” exhibition is organized by the U.S. Embassy in Thailand, in collaboration with the C-ASEAN Center, the SUPPORT Foundation, and the Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles, and with the support from Thai and U.S. businesses. "Time Owes Us Remembrance" art installation, which is the heart of the exhibition, is crafted from threads of Thai silk, cotton and multi-colored Thai textiles by Ms. Phingbodhipakkiya. The artist travelled to more than 40 textile communities across all regions of Thailand to learn about weaving techniques, and utilized them in her artwork, in combination with American weaving techniques.
The exhibition is open to the public from 18 January to 25 June 2024 at the BACC.
