On April 9, 2025, Ms. Somjai Taphaopong, Consul General of Thailand in New York, and Ms. Katesuda Thongna, Consul, joined the Songkran celebration at the Legislative Office Building in Albany, hosted by Assembly Member Steven Raga (District 30), whose constituency includes Woodside and Elmhurst—home to a vibrant Thai community.
The event featured a traditional Thai water blessing ceremony (Rod Nam Dam Hua), elegant Thai classical dance, and music performances presented by Thai associations and youth.
The celebration marked the adoption of New York State Assembly Resolution, sponsored by Assembly Member Raga and passed on April 7, 2025. This resolution officially recognizes Songkran, the Thai traditional New Year (April 13–15), as a meaningful celebration among Asian American communities in New York. It highlights the significance of Songkran as an enduring cultural heritage celebrated by the Thai community in New York and across the United States - an occasion that preserves and passes on the essence of Thai identity, while proudly reflecting the Thai diaspora’s contribution to the rich cultural diversity of American society.
On this occasion, Consul General Somjai expressed her appreciation to Assembly Member Steven Raga, Thai Community USA NYC, and OCA Asian Pacific American Advocates – New York for their partnership in supporting this meaningful resolution. She also extended heartfelt thanks to the temples, associations, and members of the Thai community whose tireless efforts in preserving and sharing the essence of the Songkran tradition continue to enrich public understanding and cultural appreciation. Their contributions reflect a deep love for the motherland and the enduring strength and solidarity of the Thai diaspora.
