Ambassador welcomed Thai Foreign Minister attending the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Retreat (AMM Retreat)

On 18 - 19 January 2025, H.E. Ms. Lada Phumas, Ambassador of Thailand to Malaysia, welcomed H.E. Mr. Maris Sangiampongsa, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, attending the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Retreat (AMM Retreat), in Langkawi, Malaysia, at the invitation of Dato’ Seri Utama Haji Mohamad bin Haji Hasan, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia. H.E. Mr. Maris Sangiampongsa and spouse received a warm welcome by representatives from the Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Langkawi concerned agencies on 17 January 2025 upon their arrival.
 
The AMM Retreat commenced with the ASEAN Senior Officials’ Meeting (SOM), chaired by Dato’ Sri Amran Mohamed Zin, ASEAN SOM Leader of Malaysia/Secretary-General of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia, whereby H.E. Mrs. Eksiri Pintaruchi, Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand led the Thai delegation. The ASEAN SOM laid groundwork for the AMM Retreat.
 
H.E. Mr. Maris Sangiampongsa, Thai Foreign Minister, had a bilateral meeting with his counterpart, Dato’ Seri Utama Haji Mohamad bin Haji Hasan, Malaysian Foreign Minister, to follow up the official visit to Malaysia of H.E. Ms. Paetongtarn Shinawatra, Prime Minister of Thailand, during 15 - 16 December 2024. Both sides also discussed ways to strengthen ASEAN as well as regional political and security matters of mutual interest.
 
The AMM Retreat was the first major meeting to be organised under Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship 2025, with attendance of over 200 participants from 10 ASEAN member states and Timor-Leste. The Retreat was convened with an aim to pave the way for ASEAN in 2025, which is under the theme “Inclusivity and Sustainability”.
 
The Retreat discussed ASEAN’s strategic direction, ways to strengthen ASEAN Community in the political, economic, social and cultural pillars, promotion of engagements with ASEAN partners, while upholding ASEAN unity and centrality, as well as regional and global issues affecting ASEAN, through the presentation of key priorities and deliverables of the ASEAN Chairmanship 2025.
 
The Thai Foreign Minister’s visit to Langkawi was successful. The Embassy received an excellent support from Ms. Suratchaya Palawongse, Acting Consul-General of the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Penang and the Consulate-General officials. In this regard, the Ambassador gave an interview to Thai press on Malaysia’s hosting of the AMM Retreat and direction of ASEAN Chairmanship 2025, Thailand-Malaysia relations especially in the area of economic cooperation, and tourism cooperation between the two countries. She also met with representatives of the Thai volunteer community based in Langkawi, whereby she thanked the Thai volunteers for the unwavering support for and good cooperation with the Embassy and the Consulate-General.
