On 17 March 2025, Ms. Siriporn Tantipanyathep, Consul-General of Thailand in Kolkata, had the honor of attending the inauguration of “the 1st Thailand Tipitaka Chanting Ceremony beneath the sacred Mahabodhi Tree” in Bodhgaya, a deeply significant event organized by Wat Thai Buddhagaya. This historic occasion, which united Buddhist pilgrims from Thailand and across the world, was a powerful reflection of faith, unity, and devotion. The Consul-General joined Thai monks, nuns, and pilgrims in a solemn Tipitaka procession, walking together in reverence toward the Mahabodhi Temple. This was the first time that Thailand had independently organized the Tipitaka Chanting at this revered site, a spiritual practice that not only honors the teachings of Lord Buddha but also serves to preserve and share the timeless wisdom of Buddhism, bridging hearts and minds across the globe.
The ceremony began with the lighting of candles by Venerable Phra Phromvajirabodhivong, Chief Abbot of Wat Thai Buddhagaya and Chairperson of the Thai Buddhist Missionary in India and Nepal. The Consul-General also paid her respects to His Majesty the King of Thailand. In her heartfelt address, she expressed her deep gratitude to all in attendance, emphasizing the importance of close collaboration between diplomats – ‘Rajdoot’ and Dhamma envoys – ‘Dhammadoot’ to strengthen the diplomatic, cultural, and spiritual ties between Thailand and India. Reflecting on her efforts over the past year to promote Thailand’s national interests and deepen the bonds between the two nations, she highlighted how the combined efforts of both Rajdoot and Dhammadoot are helping to elevate Thailand’s image as a global center of cultural and spiritual richness. This meaningful event not only strengthened the friendship between Thailand and India but also celebrated the universal values of peace, compassion, and understanding that Buddhism brings to the world.
