On 12 December 2023, H.E. Mr. Sihasak Phuangketkeow, Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs, participated in the Roundtable on the Future of Human Rights and Peace and Security as part of the Human Rights 75 High-Level Event at the United Nations Office in Geneva.

The Vice Minister stressed the interlinkage between human rights and conflicts, which have led to people’s sufferings in many parts across the world. The Human Rights Council, therefore, must do better in terms of conflict prevention, conflict resolution, and peace building with full respect of human rights at the core. The Vice Minister also reiterated Thailand’s efforts in spearheading the resolution in the Human Rights Council on technical cooperation and capacity building to fill the gaps on human rights implementation, which often time caused by the lack of human rights infrastructure and capacities.

In addition, the Vice Minister stressed the importance of Thailand’s efforts in upscaling the humanitarian assistance along the border with Myanamar, and the strengthening of dialogue among all stakeholders for peace and stability.

On 11 December 2023, Vice Minister also had a bilateral meeting with Mr. Volker Türk, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. They exchanged views on the cooperation between Thailand and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), and Thailand's important human rights advancements, for example, the withdrawal of reservations under the Convention against Torture (CAT), its intention to ratify the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance (ICCPED), as well as the new Thai government's firm adherence to democratic values, human rights and rule of law.

They also discussed other regional issues of common interests as well as Thailand's candidacy for membership of the Human Right Council (HRC) for the term 2025-2027. The High Commissioner commended Thailand's positive role and the contribution of various Thai nationals in the United Nations human rights frameworks and mechanisms. The High Commissioner expressed his appreciation that the Prime Minister of Thailand accepted the invitation to give remarks virtually from Bangkok at the opening ceremony of the Leaders’ Segment of the event. Furthermore, the High Commissioner thanked Thailand for its tangible human rights pledges on this important occasion.
