Minister of Foreign Affairs joined the Prime Minister of Thailand for an Official Visit to Malaysia

On 16 December 2024 H.E. Mr. Maris Sangiampongsa, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, accompanied H.E. Ms. Paetongtarn Shinawatra, Prime Minister of Thailand, for an Official Visit to Malaysia and attended the 7th Annual Consultation (AC) in Putrajaya, Malaysia, by the invitation of Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Malaysia.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs participated in the key activities of the Prime Minister of Thailand, including: (1) Official Welcoming Ceremony; (2) Small group discussion between the two Prime Ministers; (3) the 7th Annual Consultation (AC); (4) Exchange of Memorandums of Understanding (MOU); (5) Joint Press Conference; and (6) Official Luncheon hosted by the Prime Minister of Malaysia in honour of the Prime Minister of Thailand.

During the Official Visit to Malaysia, the Royal Thai Government reiterated the continued commitment to enhance bilateral relations and cooperation with Malaysia in all dimensions in order to achieve “Common peace and prosperity” of the two countries, including to follow up on the results of previous discussions between the Prime Ministers of both countries such as promoting cooperation in rubber and Halal industry, as well as flood prevention and mitigation near the Golok River.

On political and security cooperation, Thailand wishes to work with Malaysia to promote peace in the Southern Border Provinces of Thailand. Both sides also committed to strengthening cooperation on border security, combating illegal smuggling and human trafficking, as well as transnational crimes and non-traditional threats such as online scam.

On economic cooperation, both sides reaffirmed the commitment to achieve bilateral trade target of 30 billion US dollars by 2027 as agreed upon at the 3rd Joint Trade Committee, through promotion of border trade and digital economy, as well as facilitating cross-border transport of goods and passengers and enhancing bilateral and regional connectivity, including road and rail networks. In addition, both sides agreed to enhance tourism cooperation. Thailand expressed readiness to host the first meeting of the Thailand-Malaysia Joint Working Group on Tourism in early 2025 to discuss tourism promotion activities between the two countries as well as under Six Countries, One destination scheme initiated by Thailand. Malaysia also proposed to strengthen the energy cooperation under ASEAN as well as the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), especially for students in Southern Border Provinces of Thailand.

On regional cooperation, Thailand expressed full support to Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025, especially on the area of sustainable development, of which Thailand is the ASEAN’s coordinator. Thailand is ready to further collaborate with Malaysia in future activities to promote ASEAN's sustainable development agenda.

The Prime Minister of Thailand also invited the Prime Minister of Malaysia and spouse to pay an Official Visit to Thailand and tasked the Minister of Foreign Affairs to follow up on the outcomes of this Official Visit to be concretised in the near future.
