On 21 April 2025, H.E. Ms. Paetongtarn Shinawatra, Prime Minister, delivered an address at the opening of the 81st session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) under the theme "Regional cooperation for resilient and sustainable urban development in Asia and the Pacific" at the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok. The Prime Minister expressed concern over various challenges affecting peace, security, and development, and emphasized the importance of international cooperation, regional cooperation, multi-stakeholder collaboration, sustainable urbanization, including disaster risk reduction.
In addition, Mr. Paisan Rupanichkij, Deputy Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, delivered a country statement during the general debate on the theme "Current and emerging policy issues for inclusive and sustainable development in Asia and the Pacific." He expressed concerns over climate change and reaffirmed Thailand’s commitment to expanding renewable energy capacity and reducing emissions in the transport sector, in order to transition towards a low-carbon society. The Deputy Permanent Secretary also underlined the importance of building an inclusive society that is supportive of the elderly, particularly in the area of healthcare, and including through the use of digital technology. He also emphasized the importance of regional cooperation and multi-stakeholder collaboration, including South-South and trilateral cooperation.
Afterwards, H.E. Mr. Russ Jalichandra, Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs, hosted a dinner reception on behalf of the Thai government, in collaboration with ESCAP, for high-level delegates and participants of the 81st Session of the ESCAP at the Ministry. The event featured traditional cultural performances and an exhibition on international development cooperation.
