Thailand to Host ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting and the Related Meetings, 27-31 May 2019 in Bangkok

On 27-31 May 2019, Thailand will host the ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting (ASEAN SOM) and Related Meetings in Bangkok. In this event, H.E. Mrs. Busaya Mathelin, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, will chair the ASEAN SOM, the Joint Consultative Meeting (JCM), the ASEAN Plus Three (APT) SOM, the East Asia Summit (EAS) SOM, the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) SOM and the 7th ASEAN Coordinating Council Working Group (ACCWG) on Timor-Leste’s ASEAN Membership Application. The key objective of these Meetings is to prepare for the upcoming 34th ASEAN Summit and the 52nd ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting/Post Ministerial Conference (52nd AMM/PMC) to be convened on 23-24 June 2019 and 31 July – 3 August 2019 in Bangkok, respectively. 

The anticipated topics of discussion include enhancing cooperation on ASEAN Community Building, particularly promoting partnership for sustainability in all dimension which is the priority of Thailand’s ASEAN Chairmanship, ways and means to enhance relations and cooperation between ASEAN and its external partners, as well as exchange of views on important regional and international developments.
 
In addition, Thailand will also host the meeting of the Working Group of the Executive Committee of the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone (SEANWFZ) Commission and the Lower Mekong Initiative (LMI) SOM and the Friends of Lower Mekong (FLM) SOM. This reflects the role of Thailand in promoting peace and synergies between connectivity strategies in the region to realise the goal of sustainable security, sustainable development and economic growth, as well as sustainable human security with a view to build an ASEAN Community that is future-oriented, people-centred, and leaves no one behind.
