On 15 March 2019 at Thailand Coffee Fest 2019, the Specialty Coffee Association of Thailand (SCATH), in collaboration with the Embassy of the Republic of Colombia in Bangkok, co-organised a special talk on '40 Years of Thai - Colombian Diplomatic Relations: The Bond of Friendship through Coffee Beans'. The programme was initiated by Thailand and Colombia as a part of activities celebrating the 40th Anniversary of Thai - Colombian Diplomatic Relations, and a symbol of cooperation in promoting coffee growing and business. The special talk was attended by the Charge d'Affaires of the Embassy of the Republic of Colombia, the President of SCATH, and 2 coffee growers from Colombia together with a representative from the Department of American and South Pacific Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand.
During the talk, the Colombian side shared their experience and best practices on coffee growing techniques and business know-how of its world-renowned coffee industry. This, in particular, included its commitment to developing eco-friendly farming practices such as its advocation against deforestation, and consciousness-building activities among local farmers. On the other hand, it was pointed out that, due to Colombian coffee’s high price point, it faced challenges competing in the market. The audience was also given opportunities to exchange views and comments in this regard.
On this occasion, the Ministry’s representative congratulated the significant development of the diplomatic relations between Thailand and Colombia which will reach 40 years this year. The special talk is a part of the on-going celebration of close and cordial relations between the two countries. The Ministry’s representative also thanked SCATH and all the people involved in sponsoring the venue and supporting the event.
The Thailand Coffee Fest is considered the largest coffee-related exhibition in ASEAN, as well as a major event in Thailand’s coffee industry. The event was an opportunity for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand to promote public awareness and understanding of the Ministry’s role in strengthening relations and promoting cooperation with other countries, as well as encouraging sharing of knowledge and know-how that respond to the needs of the Thai people to enhance their capabilities in the respective fields.
