On 31 May 2018, H.E. Mr. Don Pramudwinai, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand and Mr. Jesda Katavetin, Director-General of the Department of South Asian, Middle East and African Affairs, attended Africa Day 2018 under the theme of “Africa-Thailand’s Partnership: Working Together for a Better Future”. The event was hosted by African Embassies in Thailand consisting of Morocco, Kenya, Egypt, Libya, Nigeria, South Africa and the Sudan, at Anantara Siam hotel, Bangkok.

Thai Foreign Minister congratulated all African colleagues and friends on the occasion of the 55th Anniversary of the formation of the African Union (AU), and reiterated the confidence that Thailand has for the prospects of Africa and the future it holds such as the African Continent Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and the Single African Air Travel Market (SAATM). He also emphasized the long and close friendship between Thailand and Africa through three main areas of cooperation comprising of (1) Thailand and Africa Partnership for Sustainable Development (2) Economic cooperation and (3) cooperation in the multilateral fora.  

The Africa Day 2018 is the second commemoration of the Africa Day held in Thailand, and also marks the 55th Anniversary of the formation of the African Union (AU), formerly known as the Organisation of African Unity (OAU). This year’s theme is “Africa – Thailand’s Partnership: Working Together for a Better Future” which reflects the essence of the long standing cooperation between Thailand and African countries as well as the aim to strengthen and deepen existing bonds in the future.
