On 14 – 15 May 2018, the Royal Thai Embassy in Copenhagen has organized events to promote better understanding of Authentic Thai Cuisine in Denmark. H.E. Mr. Vichit Chitvimarn, Ambassador of Thailand to Denmark invited M.L. Sirichalerm Svasti or Chef McDang from Thailand to participate in the events which are namely :
1) A lecture on “Principles of Thai Cookery” to students of the Copenhagen Hospitality College, Denmark's prominent cooking school which has produced many successful Danish chefs and contributed to the "New Nordic cuisine" movement in Denmark. After the lecture which was attended by about 70 students and teachers, Chef McDang demonstrated how to cook 2 famous Thai dishes namely Tom Yum Goong and Chuchee Salmon, and the students got an opportunity to cook the 2 dishes in the kitchen under his supervision.
2) An event entitled “An Afternoon of Authentic Thai Cuisine with Chef McDang” at Asia House. During the event, Chef McDang gave a lecture on the history and culture of Thai cuisine. and demonstrated how to make Som-Tum or Thai papaya salad to 70 invited guests comprising members of the diplomatic corps, representatives from the Danish public and private sectors, friends of Thailand and those involved in the gastronomic and cultural scenes of Denmark. Guests also had the opportunity to see the art of Thai fruit carving and taste some of Chef McDang’s creation of somtam with grilled pork neck, thod man (deep fried fish cake) and pumpkin crème brulee during the cocktail reception held afterwards.
This project aims at further promoting Thai food among Danish people in accordance with Thai Government’s policy to position Thailand as the Kitchen of the World. Moreover, it is part of many activities organized by the Royal Thai Embassy to celebrate the 160 years anniversary of the diplomatic relations between Thailand and Denmark in 2018. Thai Airways International and the Tourism Authority of Thailand has also kindly supported this event.
