On 20 September 2017, H.E. Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai of Thailand signed and presented the Instrument of Ratification to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) at a ceremony held at the United Nations in New York. The Foreign Minister joined other world leaders from 50 countries in signing the Treaty. Thailand also deposited the Instrument  of Ratification at the ceremony, being one of the first 3 states to do so, along with the Holy See and Guyana. Once 50 such instruments have been deposited, the Treaty will enter into force.

The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons prohibits the development, testing, production, stockpiling, stationing, transfer, use and threat of use of nuclear weapons, as well as assistance and encouragement to the prohibited activities. The large number of signatures on this day is a remarkable show of support for the first legally binding international agreement to comprehensively prohibit nuclear weapons and to hopefully pave way towards their total elimination.
