The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Thailand Foundation, launched a Muaythai Roadshow in Qatar with an aim to promoting “Thainess” through the art of Muaythai, as well as to raise an awareness of the authenticity of Muaythai techniques and styles amongst the residents in Doha.  On 20 August 2016, the event “Muaythai Roadshow 2016: Promoting Muaythai Focusing on History; Muaythai as Exercise, Sport and Entertainment” was organized at the Grand Hyatt Doha with the support of the Royal Thai Embassy in Doha and Evolve: Mind Body Soul, a local wellness company.  Mr. Sane Tubtimtong, Grand Master and founder of Siamyout Thai Martial Arts and Culture Academy and Mr. Wittawat Ka-Som (Kru Din), Master and founder of Lanna Fighting Muaythai Training Camp, brought Muaythai athletes to showcase Muaythai on this occasion.
The event composed of a brief introduction on history of Muaythai, Wai-Kru ceremony, demonstrations of traditional Muaythai and Thai boxing between local Muaythai coaches and Muaythai athletes. These activities familiarized the residents in Doha  with the historical and cultural backgrounds of Muaythai, Mae Mai Muaythai (the art of self-defense) and technical skills that focus on brain power rather than mere use of force. The Roadshow was warmly received by over 250 participants, which included diplomatic corps, media and Muaythai enthusiasts.  Other prominent participants included Mr. Hassan Abdullah Al-Thawadi, Secretary General of Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy, an agency under the Qatari Government responsible for hosting World Football2022.
His Excellency Mr. Soonthorn Chaiyindeepum, Ambassador of Thailand to Qatar delivered his opening remarks, in which he touched on the development of Muaythai, from its ancient history to become the national sport of Thailand as it is nowadays.  Muaythai is regarded as a sport that benefits both body and mind of the practitioners, males and females alike.  It is our hope that this first Muaythai Roadshow in Qatar will open doors for Muaythai in Qatar and other countries in the region. The Thai government is cooperating closely with the Thai private sectors involved as well as foreign partners, in listing Muaythai in the Olympic-recognized sports in the near future.
