Ms. Sutthiluck Sa-ngamangkang, Consul-General of Thailand to Vancouver, met with Professor Emeritus Peter Boothroyd, Centre for Human Settlement, School of Community and Regional Planning, University of British Columbia (UBC) on 2 February 2016 to discuss ways and means to promote sufficiency economy in Western Canada. Currently, Professor Boothroyd has been studying the possibility of opening a course on sufficiency economy, a well-known philosophy initiated by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand, for interested Canadians and foreign residents in Western Canada. Participants to this course would spend about 1 week on a field trip in both Bangkok, the capital city of Thailand, and her adjacent cities to learn about the theory and practices of this philosophy.

 

            Professor Boothroyd is an expert on development planning. He used to open a course on sufficiency economy and led a field trip to Thailand twice in 2013 and 2015. The course was conducted in close cooperation with Thai-Canada Economic Cooperation Foundation (TCECF), Thammasat University and Chulalongkorn University.

 

            Sufficiency economy is a philosophy that emphasizes on 3 pillars namely moderation, reasonableness and self-immunity with 2 main conditions including knowledge and moral. It is also considered a leading policy of the Thai Government and 1 of the 4 priority areas that Thailand will pursue during her chairmanship of G-77.
