On 12 November 2015, the Prince Mahidol Award Foundation under the Royal Patronage (PMAF) held a press conference at Siriraj Hospital, Bangkok, to announce this year’s Prince Mahidol Laureates in the field of Medicine and Public Health. Mr. Sek Wannamethee, Director-General of the Department of Information in the capacity of Chair of the PMAF Public Relations Sub-Committee, together with Professor Prasith Wattanapa, Deputy Chairperson of the PMAF, Professor Supat Vanichyakarn, Secretary-General of the PMAF, and Professor Vicharn Panich, Chair of the International Awards Committee jointly addressed the press.
This year’s Prince Mahidol Award in the field of Medicine goes to Professor Morton M. Mower from the United States of America. Dr. Mower is the co-inventor of the Automatic Implantable Cardioverter Defibrilator (AICD) and the core inventor of the Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy (CRT) device. Meanwhile, the Prince Mahidol Laureates in the field of Public Health is Sir Michael Gideon Marmot, a British national, for his work on the Social Determinants of Health (SDH) and research in the field of social epidemiology. H.E. Mr. Mark Kent, the Ambassador of the United Kingdom to Thailand and Mr. Tim Holtz, Program Director at the Center for Disease Control (CDC) Office in Bangkok also attended the press conference and delivered their congratulatory remarks.
H.M. King Bhumibol Adulyadej has graciously granted H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn the opportunity to host the Prince Mahidol Award Ceremony on 28 January 2016 at Chakri Maha Prasat Throne Hall, Bangkok.
It is noteworthy that the two of 2015 Nobel Prize Laureates in the field of Medicine are alumni of Prince Mahidol Laureates in the field of Medicine which are Professor Satoshi Omura (1997) and Professor Tou Youyou (2003).
