The Ministry of Foreign Affairs supported the Muslim Association of Al-Quran Reader of Thailand under the patronage of the Sheikhul Islam of Thailand to lead two Thai representatives namely Mr. Wanyahaiya Adulyasad and Miss Masvilla Chewae to participate in the Southeast Asian Youth Al-Quran Reading Competition 2015.  The competition, which was held from 15 - 18 September 2015 in Banda Seri Begawan, was organized by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports of Brunei Darussalam.

The competition has been organized biannually to comply with the intent of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah of Brunei Darussalam, aiming for the country to play an important role in the field of promoting ASEAN youth, who could bring about great impact towards the development of an ASEAN community in all areas including education, economy and technology. His Majesty has given continuous support to the competition by presiding over the closing and the award presentation ceremony every time. This year, all 10 ASEAN member countries nominated representatives aged from 18 to 25 to participate in the said competition. The event concluded in a victory for a Malaysian recite in the male category (Qari) while a reciter from the Philippines claimed the first prize in the female category (Qariah).

Although the Thai reciters did not win any prize, it was a good experience which is more valuable than the result of competition because the Thai delegation had an opportunity to participate in an international competition and develop their skills. In addition, it also helped strengthen people-to-people contact and build networks with the Muslim community, which would boost Thailand’s image as a country wherein freedom of religion is valued.

On this occasion, Mr. Chirdchu Raktabutr, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Thailand to Brunei Darussalam welcomed the delegation and assigned Mr. Piyapong Nuntana, Minister Counsellor, to facilitate and host a dinner for the delegation. Furthermore, the Royal Thai Embassy also arranged for the delegation to meet with Thai students to discuss and exchange information and views on education and living in Brunei Darussalam. The Embassy also encouraged Thai students and Thai community in Banda Seri Begawan to attend the competition in order to show their support for the Thai reciters.
