Permanent Secretary of Foreign Affairs co-chairs the 7th FEALAC Foreign Ministers' Meeting in San Jose, Costa Rica

From 19 - 21 August 2015, Permanent Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Norachit Sinhaseni, led the Thai delegation to the 7th Foreign Ministers Meeting of the Forum for East Asia - Latin America Cooperation (FEALAC FMM) in San Jose, Costa Rica.

At this meeting, thailand proposed 3 important initiatives. First is a Guideline for FEALAC Working Process, the second is the institutionalization of the FEALAC Business Forum following the highly successful and well-attended 2nd FEALAC Business Forum held in bangkok in August 2014 and the third being the proposal for FEALAC to consider implementing required projects involving at least one country from each region in addition to the national projects that FEALAC countries have been implementing. All three Thai proposals were well-received by the FEALAC members and appear in the San Jose Declaration issued at the end of the meeting.

On 20 August 2015, the Permanent Secretary paid a courtesy call on H.E. Luis Guillermo Solís, President of Costa Rica, and H.E. Mr. Manuel Gonzalez Sanz, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Worship of Costa Rica. 

On 21 August 2015, the Permanent Secretary co-chaired the 7th FEALAC CMM with the Minister of Foreign Affairs adn Worship of Costa rica. Thailand and Costa Rica have been working closely together as respective regional coordinators of FEALAC between 2013 - 2015. The meeting discussed ways to strengthen coopeartion between the two regions in various areas, including education, science, technology, innovation, health and healthcare, culture, youth, climate change and the environment, SMEs, sustainable development and people-to-people cooperation. The meeting also discussed ways to develop cooperation between FEALAC and regional and international financial organizations.

Thailand has initiated and contributed significantly to the improvement of FEALAC working process. During the past two years, Thailand proposed and implemented various projects including FEALAC Health and Healthcare and Community Empowerment Network, FEALAC Women Entrepreneurs Network, FEALAC Friendship Schools Network, as well as the institutionalization of the FEALAC Business Forum. Furthermore, Thailand has also initiated and pushed forward FEALAC STI Policy Dialogue and FEALAC Network of Institutions engaged in Research and Control of Tropical and Emerging Diseases. 

FEALAC was established in 1999 with the goal of strengthening cooperation between East Asia and Latin America. Currently, FEALAC consists of 36 members (16 countries from East Asia and 20 from Latin America). As the East Asia Regional Coordinator from 2013 - 2015, Thailand hosted the 15th FEALAC Senior Officials' Meeting, Working Group meetings, and side events in Bangkok in August last year.
