On Thursday 7 May2015, H.E. Mr. NoppornAdchariyavanich, Ambassador of Thailand to Sri Lanka paid a courtesy call on H.E. Mr. MaithripalaSirisena, the President of Sri Lanka at his private residence. H.E. Mr. Nopporn is the first foreign Ambassador to meet H.E. Mr. Sirisena at his private residence. During the courtesy call, H.E. Mr. Noppornsaid that Thailand and Sri Lanka have had a long history of close religious relations more than 800 years. Buddhism has played an important role in binding the two countries together. At present, the relations between the two countries have been consolidated and expanded to cover other areas such astrade, investment, agriculture, tourism and technicalcooperation. Furthermore, this year 2015 is marked as the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Sri Lanka. The Royal Thai Embassy in Colombo has organised various activitiesto celebrate this important occasion. Meanwhile, H.E. Mr. Sirisena said that Sri Lanka and Thailand are Buddhist countries and share many similarities. He opined that the two countries can cooperate in various fields of mutual benefits and also invited Thai businessmen and investors to invest more in Sri Lanka especially in the fields of agricultural industry and consumer products. H.E. Mr. Sirisena also stated that the Sri Lankan Government is willing to collaborate with the Royal Thai Embassy in Colombo for the activities organisedto celebrate 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Sri Lanka.
