On the occasion of the United Nations Day on 24 October, the Department of International Organizations  organized activities to promote understanding of the United Nations, as well as Thailand’s role as an active and a responsible member of the United Nations. The activities are as follows:

            1. The “UNderstand” exhibition, which provides information on the United Nations and on the constructive role of Thailand and Thai people in the United Nations.

            2. Special Lunch Talk: Thai People in the UN, at Vithes Samosorn Hall, Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The speakers included:

                        1) Mr. Monthian Buntan, Member of the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and Member of the National Legislative Assembly

                        2) Mr. Viroj Sumyai, Member of the International Narcotics Control Board

3) Police Lieutenant Colonel Pranee Inseawong, Senior Supervisor of Medical Evacuation Centre (Nurse Level 3), who served for peacekeeping missions in Timor-Leste.

4) Commander Yada Thiemthip, Chief of Training Section, Operations Division, Armed Forces Development Command, Royal Thai Armed Forces, who served for peacekeeping missions in Darfur.

             Director-General of the Department of International Organizations (Ms. Pornprapai Ganjanarintr), gave the opening address.  There were approximately 150 participants, including representatives from the United Nations Association of Thailand and university students.

            3. Model United Nations Security Council (MUNSC), which was conducted by university students at Narathip Auditorium, Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The event was also attended by representatives from the Embassy of the United States of America, the Embassy of the Russian Federation, the Embassy of the Federative Republic of Brazil, the Embassy of the Arab Republic of Egypt, the New Zealand Embassy and the Embassy of the Kingdom of Morocco, who gave valuable comments to the participants.

            The UN Day events provided an opportunity for participants, especially university students, to understand how the UN operates, to realize the importance of Thailand’s participation in the organization, and to learn from people who have had first-hand experience working with the United Nations. It was also an opportunity to update  the public and foreign diplomatic corps  on  the campaign for Thailand’s candidature for the non-permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council  for the term 2017-2018.
