            On 15 September, 2014, the Royal Thai Consulate-General and the Hong Kong-Thailand Business Council co-organised the Panel Discussion on the “ASEAN – Hong Kong Free Trade Agreement: Challenges and Opportunities” at the Hong Kong Club. The Panel Discussion provided a platform for stakeholders in the public and private sectors to exchange views on potential challenges and opportunities arising from the ASEAN – Hong Kong Free Trade Agreement (FTA) under negotiation. The Panel Discussion was opened with the Consul-General’s welcoming remark. It was then followed by discussions among invited speakers, namely Mr. Thawatchai Sophastienpong, Chief of Inspector General of the Ministry of Commerce and Co-Chair of the ASEAN-Hong Kong FTA Trade Negotiation; Mr. Narong Chearavanont, Vice Chairman of Marketing and Distribution Business, Charoen Pokphand Group Co., Ltd.; Mr. Simon Galpin, Director-General, InvestHK; and Dr. Reuben Mondejar, Associate Professor, City University of Hong Kong, with Mr. Bernard Chan, a member of the Executive Council, taking part as a moderator. The Panel Discussion attracted 90 participants and pointed towards the significance of the ASEAN-Hong Kong FTA to the prospects of trade and investment of the business community in the region. Participants were also updated on the latest developments of the negotiation, research and studies, and experiences from the private sector on the benefits derived from and challenges posed by the FTA.
