Deputy Prime Minister/Foreign Minister had discussion with Chairman of the American Jewish Committee (AJC)

On 28 September 2013, Mr. Stanley Bergman, Chairman of the American Jewish Committee (AJC) called on Mr. Surapong Tovichakchaikul, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand on the sidelines of the 68th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Surapong discussed with Chairman Bergman in several points. First, Mr. Surapong updated that the Thai Government has promoted reconciliation and unity in the country by initiating a national forum where people from various groups can work together to provide a sustainable solution for Thailand’s future. As a result of the political stability, many countries have upgraded relations with Thailand. The Thai economy has also continuously developed.

On the Thai-Israel Relations, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Surapong commented that Thailand regards Israel as a key partner since both countries have cooperated in many areas such as military, security, science and technology. More importantly, the year 2014 will mark the 60th Anniversary of the Thai-Israel. On this occasion, President Shimon Peres will officially visit Thailand.

For developments in Myanmar and China, Mr. Surapong thanked the US’s constructive role in Myanmar. However, the situation in Rakhine State is a challenge for the Myanmar Government. Mr. Surapong added that Myanmar needs support from the international community for economic and administrative reforms. For China, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Surapong pointed out that Thailand has benefited from the economical rise of China and also believes that China needs a peaceful environment in order to focus on the economic development and the improvement of the well-being of the people. He also added that Thailand has agreed with China to establish a comprehensive cooperative strategic partnership with China, and as country coordinator for ASEAN-China Dialogue Relations, Thailand attempted to promote and maintain momentum of dialogue and cooperation. 

On the situation in Middle East, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Surapong supported the international community on the issue of Iran’s nuclear programme. He also appreciated the gesture of the new Iranian President in solving the dispute. Moreover, Mr. Surapong expressed his appreciation on the resumption of peace talks between Israel and Palestine and also reaffirmed that Thailand supports the right of Israelis to live in peace and security.
