On 29 August 2013, the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Hong Kong held the “Roundtable Discussion
on Hong Kong – Thailand Business Opportunities” under the Hong Kong and Macao Business Information Center (BIC) project at Conrad Hong Kong. Chaired by the Consul-General, the Roundtable Discussion was aimed at providing Hong Kong and Thailand a platform for discussions and exchanges of views and experiences in the latest developments in economic, trade and investment policies, as well as for networking opportunities to identify challenges and co-operation to enhance business opportunities and investment climate. The total number of 24 Hong Kong and Thai participants came from both public and private sectors. Held for the first time, the Roundtable Discussion led to the exploration of opportunities obtained from new national and regional economic policy, including tax reduction, ASEAN Economic Community, ASEAN – Hong Kong Free Trade Agreement negotiations, and the creation of Thailand as an ASEAN subregional hub, enabling better determination of the scope of co-operation. Significant outcomes were reflected in the agreement between InvestHK and the Board of Investment in creating a Joint Working Group to construct a business model to identify areas of potential joint investment promotion. In the long run, Thailand also agreed to promote student exchange programmes to foster closer people – to – people relations.
