Virtual Belated Commemoration of the International Day of Vesak 2020
2 July 2020, via a virtual platform
H.E. Mr. Vitavas Srivihok, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Thailand to the United Nations, hosted the virtual belated Commemoration of the International Day of Vesak 2020, together with the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the United Nations, on 2 July 2020, on a virtual platform. The event was participated live by the President of the General Assembly, the Secretary General of the United Nations, and a large number of Ambassadors and Permanent Representatives and high-level representatives of United Nations Member States, as well as honourable monks Venerable Dr. Anil Sakya, Deputy Rector, Mahamakut Buddhist University in Thailand, and Venerable Dr. Bellanwila Dhammaratana Nayaka Thero. Participants gave their best wishes on this auspicious occasion and reflected on the invaluable teachings of Lord Buddha, which remain relevant and provide guidance for response to today’s world challenges including from the COVID-19 pandemic. Lord Buddha’s teachings also resonate with the principles and the work of the United Nations, particularly on peace, respect and promotion of equality, peaceful and harmonious society, as well as sustainable development.
The event also welcomed monks of different sects of Buddhism, as well as a large number of Buddhists and non-Buddhist participants from outside of the United Nations, who followed the event live and thereafter from VDO clip on the internet.
