          On 3 November 2019, H.E. General Prayut Chan-o-cha (Ret.), Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand, chaired the 10th ASEAN-UN Summit, during the 35th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits. The Meeting was attended by ASEAN Leaders, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, and the Secretary-General of ASEAN.

           The Meeting reiterated support for multilateralism, a rules-based international order, and sustainability in all dimensions. It noted the quantum leap in collaboration between ASEAN and the UN over the past two years, reaffirmed the commitment to strengthen the ASEAN-UN Comprehensive Partnership, and noted the complementarities between the ASEAN Community Vision 2025 and the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The Meeting reviewed progress in the implementation of the ASEAN-UN Plan of Action to Implement the Joint Declaration on Comprehensive Partnership between ASEAN and the United Nations 2016 – 2020.

          On political-security cooperation, ASEAN and the UN reaffirmed their commitment to strengthen collaboration in countering terrorism and violent extremism, border management, preventive diplomacy, as well as cooperation through the ASEAN Institute for Peace and Reconciliation. The United Nations expressed appreciation for ASEAN’s continued contribution in the United Nations’ peace-keeping operations, ASEAN’s efforts to promote the role of women in peace and security, and supported ASEAN’s mechanisms on human rights, including the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights. The UN also backed ASEAN’s supportive role in resolving the issue of displaced persons in the region.

          The Meeting supported sustainable economic growth through preparations for the Fourth Industrial Revolution, increased connectivity, and cooperation on digital economy development.

          The Meeting discussed cooperation in countering the spread of pandemics, disaster management, climate change, and environmental conservation. In addition, it discussed cooperation in realizing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, developing creative industries, and promoting cooperation through the newly-established ASEAN Centre for Sustainable Development Studies and Dialogue (ACSDSD).
