On 2 November 2019, the Kingdom of Bahrain and the Federal Republic of Germany officially acceded to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC) during the 35th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits in Bangkok and Nonthaburi, Thailand.

           The Instrument of Accession to the TAC was signed by His Excellency Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Bahrain, and H.E. Dr. Peter Schoof, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Germany to ASEAN, as Personal Envoy of the Foreign Minister of the Federal Republic of Germany.

          The TAC contains principles on promoting and sustaining regional peace and stability that was originally signed by the five Founding Members of ASEAN in 1976. It was subsequently opened to all countries that have expressed their intent in enhancing their relations with ASEAN. With the inclusion of the Kingdom of Bahrain and the Federal Republic of Germany, the total number of High Contracting Parties to the TAC is 40 Parties, which also includes all the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council. The provisions of the TAC focus on the peaceful settlement of disputes and cooperation in areas of mutual interest within the ASEAN region.
