Thailand stressed that 2022 should be the year in which the international community put our aspirations into action with regard to nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation. Crucially, the goal of the total elimination of nuclear weapons cannot be achieved without the support of the general public, particularly the youth.

On 28 September 2021, H.E. Mr. Vijavat Isarabhakdi, Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand, delivered a statement at the High-level plenary meeting to commemorate and promote the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, held virtually during the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) at the UN Headquarters in New York, USA.

The Vice Minister emphasised that next year (2022), important meetings, namely the 10th Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and the First Meeting of States Parties to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), will be held and concrete outcomes should be our highest priority. He also reinterated that the goal of the total elimination of nuclear weapons cannot be achieved without the support of the general public, particularly the youth, as the humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapons are relevant to all. “Only then will we be able to mobilise the much-needed cross-generational support to secure a more peaceful future for all,” the Vice Minister stated.
