On 17 July 2024 at United Nations Headquarters, New York, H.E. Mr. Russ Jalichandra, Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs, delivered a statement at the UN Security Council (UNSC) Quarterly Open Debate on ‘the Situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question’, under Russia’s presidency.

Vice Minister Russ expressed Thailand’s grave concern towards the now 10-month long situation in Gaza, especially the deteriorating humanitarian situation. He repeated Thailand’s call for an immediate, full and complete ceasefire, and the need to prevent a region-wide escalation. He called for the implementation of relevant UNSC Resolutions, in particular Resolution 2735 (2024) and adherence to international law, particularly international humanitarian law on civilian protection and humanitarian considerations. The Vice Minister, again, pleaded for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages, which include Thais, and highlighted the issue of humanitarian assistance.

The Vice Minister also praised and expressed support for the work of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), and urged the resumption and continuation of support to UNRWA. Thailand, in addition, will also make donation to the Egyptian Red Crescent to support assistance for Palestinians in need. To conclude, Vice Minister Russ expressed support for genuine dialogue towards a peaceful solution, based on the two-State solution.
