Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs held discussions with the State Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka

On 13 June 2024 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Mr. Russ Jalichandra, Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs welcomed and held discussion with H.E. Mr. Tharaka Balasuriya, State Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka, H.E. Ms. Colonne Appuhamillage Chaminda Inoka Colonne, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Thailand and Mr. Sisira Senavirathne, Director General of the Consular Affairs Division.

 

Both sides highlighted the strong relationship between the two countries, particularly the long-standing close ties in Buddhism, and agreed to elevate the volume of trade and investment, especially following the visit to Sri Lanka of the Prime Minister of Thailand and the signing of Thailand - Sri Lanka Free Trade Agreement in February 2024 in potential areas such as in the fisheries sector, renewable energy, agriculture and tourism. Additionally, the Thai side reiterated the request for the Sri Lankan side to take good care of the two Thai elephants gifted to Sri Lanka by the Royal Thai Government. Both sides also shared updates on the proposed agreement on visa exemption for ordinary passport holders.

 

On this occasion, the Sri Lankan side requested assistance from Thailand in facilitating the return of 49 Sri Lankan nationals stranded in Myanmar via Thailand, to which  Thai side expressed its readiness. The Sri Lankan delegation was also scheduled to meet with the other Thai agencies, including the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, the Governor of Tak Province, as well as non-profit organizations in Thailand to discuss ways to provide further assistance to their nationals.
