Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand held an informal talk with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Lao PDR in Bangkok on the survey and demarcation of the Thai - Lao boundary with an aim to strengthen the cooperation and development of the border area for the benefit of peoples along the Thai-Lao border.

On Friday 5 November 2021, H.E. Mr. Don Pramudwinai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, held informal talk with H.E. Mr. Saleumxay Kommasith, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Lao PDR, in their capacity of Co-Chairs of the Thai-Lao Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) in Bangkok after co-chairing the 22nd Joint Commission (JC) on Bilateral Cooperation between Thailand and the Lao PDR. The two Foreign Ministers agreed upon furthering the works on survey and demarcation of the land and river boundary between Thailand and the Lao PDR within the scope of JBC, with an aim to strengthen the cooperation and development of the border area for the benefit of the Thai and Lao people. The next Meeting of the Thai-Lao JBC will be hosted by the Lao PDR following the 11th Meeting of the Thai-Lao JBC which was held in Bangkok in 2018.

Thailand and the Lao PDR share a common border stretching 1,810 kilometers, consisting of 702 kilometers of land boundary and 1,108 kilometers of river boundary (955 kilometers along the Mekong River and 153 kilometers along the Hueang River), which was agreed upon under the Siamese-French Treaties concluded during 1904 - 1926. At present, the Thai-Lao JBC, which is co-chaired by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of both countries, is in the process of undertaking survey and demarcation of the said agreed boundary in order to enhance the efficiency of the border area development and to close gaps between the two countries which maybe arising from the use and development of the aforementioned area. Currently, the Thai-Lao JBC have demarcated approximately 676 kilometers (equivalent to 96 percent of the total land boundary) with a total of 211 boundary pillars.
