The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand strengthened the partnership between Thailand and China, followed up on the request for Thai students to return to China, and exchanged views on the situation in Myanmar, during a phone conversation with the State Councilor and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China.

On 22 April 2021 at 15.00 - 15.30 hrs. (Thailand local time), H.E. Mr. Don Pramudwinai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand, had a telephone conversation with H.E. Mr. Wang Yi, State Councilor and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China.

Both sides discussed cooperation on the procurement of COVID-19 vaccines. The State Councilor and Minister of Foreign Affairs of China stated China’s intention to donate 500,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccines to support the efforts by the Royal Thai Government in combating the pandemic, for which Deputy Prime Minister Don expressed appreciation. The Thai side also followed up with the Chinese side on the request to facilitate travel for Thai students to return to China to continue their studies – an issue which both sides discussed during the official visit of the State Councilor and Minister of Foreign Affairs of China to Thailand last October.

They also exchanged views on the situation in Myanmar. As next-door neighbours of Myanmar, both Thailand and China wish for a return to stability and normalcy in Myanmar. The Chinese side expressed appreciation to and fully supported the efforts by Thailand and ASEAN to constructively engage with Myanmar and to encourage the pursuance of dialogue with a view to achieving a peaceful resolution to the situation, including the convening of the ASEAN Leaders’ Meeting. The Thai side expressed appreciation to the Chinese side for the support to ASEAN in this endeavour.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand also accepted the invitation by the State Councilor and Minister of Foreign Affairs of China to attend the Special ASEAN-China Foreign Ministers’ Meeting to be held on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of ASEAN-China dialogue relations and the Sixth Mekong-Lancang Cooperation Foreign Ministers' Meeting, which China plans to host in June 2021.
