The Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs held a virtual talk with Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam to discuss ways to enhance the “Strengthened Strategic Partnership,” celebration of the 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations, and cooperation on post-COVID-19 recovery between Thailand and Vietnam.
 
On 24 February 2021, Mr. Thani Thongphakdi, Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, held a virtual introductory meeting with H.E. Mr. Nguyen Quoc Dzung, Deputy Foreign Minister of Vietnam, and discussed ways to further enhance bilateral cooperation between Thailand and Vietnam.
 
Both sides affirmed determination to advance the “Strengthened Strategic Partnership” in all dimensions and to work closely together towards the post-COVID economic recovery. Both sides also looked forward to the convening of the 4th Joint Cabinet Retreat (JCR) later this year to push forward cooperation in various areas as well as to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the establishment of Thailand-Vietnam diplomatic relations.
 
The Thai Permanent Secretary asked the Vietnamese side to continue to support Thai investors in Vietnam, emphasising their constructive role in the economic and social development in Vietnam. He also proposed the idea of a bilateral MRA for automotive products to further strengthen supply chain connectivity between the two countries’ automotive industries.       
 
Both sides exchanged views on ways to enhance cooperation in the Mekong sub-region, including the early implementation of Greater Mekong Sub-region Cross Border Transport Agreement (GMS CBTA) and the strengthening of the Mekong River Commission (MRC). Thailand also commended Vietnam for its successful ASEAN Chairmanship in 2020.

The Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs asked the Vietnamese side to continue to support Thai investors in Vietnam, emphasizing their constructive role in the economic and social development in Vietnam. He also proposed the idea of a bilateral MRA for automotive products to further strengthen supply chain connectivity between the two countries’ automotive industries.
