On 28 - 29 April 2024, His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, paid an official visit to the Kingdom of Thailand, as Guest of the Royal Thai Government at the invitation of His Excellency Mr. Srettha Thavisin, Prime Minister of Thailand. His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei Darussalam was accompanied by His Royal Highness Prince Abdul Mateen, along with Dato Dr. Amin Abdullah, Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Minister of Finance and Economy II, Dato Erywan Pehin Yusof, Minister of Foreign Affairs II, Dato Dr. Abdul Manaf Metussin, Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism, and high-level representatives from various agencies of Brunei. The previous official visit of His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei Darussalam took place 12 years ago
During the visit, His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei Darussalam had a Royal Audience with Their Majesties King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua and Queen Suthida Bajrasudhabimalalakshana. His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei Darussalam also had bilateral discussion with the Prime Minister of Thailand at the Government House, witnessed the signing of cooperation documents, and attended an official luncheon hosted by the Prime Minister of Thailand.
During the bilateral meeting between His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei Darussalam and the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand on 29 April 2024, both leaders agreed that this official visit of His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei Darussalam to Thailand and the recent official visit of the Prime Minister of Thailand to Brunei Darussalam on 11 – 12 October 2023 were major events that have significantly advanced bilateral relations between the two countries, and major highlights of the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations between the two countries in 2024.
His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei Darussalam expressed appreciation to the Prime Minister of Thailand for the warm welcome and hospitality. The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to further deepening cooperation through regular exchange of high-level visits and full utlisation of the existing bilateral mechanisms, including the Joint Commission on Bilateral Cooperation (JCBC) at the Foreign Minister level. Brunei Darussalam would host the 2nd session of the JCBC in 2024.
The two leaders agreed to further strengthening bilateral economic cooperation in various areas, such as trade, investment, food security and Halal cooperation, tourism, digital economy, as well as cooperation in the areas of education, human resource development, and people-to-people relations. The two leaders also exchanged views on regional and international developments of common interest, including ASEAN, Myanmar, South China Sea, the Middle East, and climate change. The Joint Press Statement was issued after the discussion.
Following the bilateral meeting, the two leaders witnessed the signing of 2 documents namely (1) Memorandum of Understanding between Thailand’s Government Pension Fund (GPF) and Brunei Investment Agency (BIA); and (2) Memorandum of Understanding on Tourism Cooperation between the Ministry of Tourism and Sports of Thailand and the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism of Brunei Darussalam.
