On 31 May 2024, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs co-hosted the National Consultation on Migration Governance Indicator (MGI) with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), which was attended by over 150 representatives from government agencies, academia, Office of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), and civil society.
On this occasion, Ms. Pinsuda Jayanama, the Director-General of the Department of International Organizations, reiterated in her opening remarks that Thailand is a hub for migrants in Southeast Asia, being a country of origin, transit, as well as destination, and experiencing mixed flow of migration, both regular and irregular. Migrants, especially migrant workers, that have moved into Thailand to work, have helped to fill the gaps between demand and supply of labor in various industries. And in the context of rapidly aging society like Thailand, migrants, including migrant workers, can play crucial roles in sustaining the country’s economic development and ensuring continuation of daily lives of its citizens.
She further explained that it is therefore important for Thailand to have migration management policies that are comprehensive, effective, and well-balanced considering security, economic and social interests, while ensuring that migrants rights and well- being are appropriately upheld and promoted. It is also important for community and general public to have positive attitude and right perception of migrants.
