Ambassador of Thailand to Norway, met with the representatives from the Marine Recycling Cluster (MRC)

On 23 March 2023, H.E. Ms. Vimolbajra Ruksakiati, Ambassador of Thailand to Norway, met with the representatives from the Marine Recycling Cluster (MRC) and their member companies, namely SALT Lofoten AS, Tiepoint AS, and LoVeMar AS and attended their briefings on technology and innovation to combat marine debris. The meeting was also joined by Mr. Monsak Jangariyawong, Minister Counsellor, and Ms. Kanoknapat Suksong, Researcher and coordinator of Thailand and Nordic Countries Innovation Unit (TNIU).

SALT Lofoten AS works on research and gives consultants on marine litter, marine management, and coastal development. SALT maps quantities and transport of marine litter and identifies sources and their origins. The knowledge gained from this research will be used as preventive measures and communicated to decision makers in Norway. The main goal is to be “the voice for nature through projects because nature cannot speak for their own rights”.

Tiepoint AS is a leading drone services provider for government agencies and large scaled organizations. Tiepoint’s services include mapping of marine debris, both onshore and in the ocean, with Artificial Intelligence (AI), and providing updated information on types of marine debris, forest areas, condition of the forest, and calculation of CO2 quotas. Tiepoint can provide information on mangrove forest areas, reforesting areas, and calculation of the forest annual growth.

LoVeMar AS provides consultant services and equipment for collecting marine litter from the coastlines, water surface and rivers. LoVeMar also develops highly efficient technology, products, and services for collecting marine plastic waste, such as a marine debris sweeper, used for collecting litter from the ocean surface, and a floating conveyor belt, used for collecting marine litter from the shore.

Mr. Terje Kristensen, CCO, Tiepoint, is interested in collaborating with Thailand on mapping of the mangrove forest areas in Thailand, similar to a project being done in Indonesia. Mr. Terje Olav Hansen, CCO, LoVeMar AS also expressed an interest to collaborate with Thailand in transferring knowledge and investing in marine debris technology, such as marine debris sweeper and floating conveyor belt. The full-scale testing of the said technology has shown its efficiency to capture up to 99.8 percent of the existing marine debris. The Thai Embassy in Oslo will coordinate with the relevant Thai agencies concerned to further promote the collaboration on marine debris as proposed by Tiepoint AS and LoVeMar AS.

Marine Recyling Cluster (MRC) is financially supported by Innovation Norway and Norwegian Retailers' Environment Fund. The Norwegian Retailers' Environment Fund receives NOK 1 for every plastic bag being sold in Norway. All Norwegian retailers and wholesalers who buy or sell plastic bags can become a member and contribute to the Fund's work in tackling environmental problems. This is a good model of collaboration between private and public sectors in Norway to address the issue of marine debris.
