On 15-16 June 2024, H.E. Mr. Russ Jalichandra, Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs, led the Thai delegation to the Summit on Peace in Ukraine held in the Swiss Confederation, as designated by the Prime Minister of Thailand. The invitation was extended by H.E. Ms. Viola Amherd, President of the Swiss Confederation. The Summit aimed to foster dialogue towards a shared understanding of peace in Ukraine.
The Vice Minister delivered remarks at the Break-out Session on Food Security and Freedom of Navigation, addressing three major issues. Firstly, he emphasized the global food system's fragility and the critical need for peace to ensure food security worldwide. Secondly, the Vice Minister highlighted Thailand and Ukraine's significant roles as the “kitchens of the world”, i.e. major food exporters, and subsequently stressed the importance of their joint commitment to global food security. Lastly, he reaffirmed Thailand’s support for initiatives that contribute to global food security, such as the Black Sea Grain Initiative, and the efforts to revive it. In closing, the Vice Minister underscored the importance of assisting Ukraine in addressing the long-term impacts on its agricultural sector and ensuring its food security.
On the sidelines of the summit, the Vice Minister met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Türkiye, National Security Advisor of the United Kingdom, and Director-General for Political Affairs of the Netherlands, seeking to enhance bilateral cooperation and garner support for Thailand’s candidature to the Human Rights Council (HRC) for the 2025-2027 term, as well as its membership bid for the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). He also met with representatives from Germany, Kosovo, Singapore, India, Liechtenstein, New Zealand, Romania, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and Switzerland.
Thailand’s participation in this Summit underscores its supporting for an early resolution of the conflict and its ongoing involvement in addressing the conflict’s impact on food security and humanitarian needs.
