On 3 – 4 July 2022, His Excellency Mr. Don Pramudwinai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, had fruitful bilateral meetings with his counterparts from Viet Nam, Lao PDR, Cambodia and Myanmar to advance a wide range of cooperation for mutual benefit. The Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister also took these opportunities to exchange views on regional issues of common interest with the aim of maintaining peace and stability, further strengthening economic linkages among countries in the Mekong Sub-region, and achieving strong, resilient and sustainable economic recovery of these countries.

On 3 July 2022, the Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister had a bilateral meeting with His Excellency Mr. Bui Thanh Son, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Viet Nam. Both sides discussed ways to further strengthen strategic partnership between Thailand and Viet Nam. They were pleased with a successful visit to Thailand between 21 – 24 June 2022 by Her Excellency Ms. Vo Thi Anh Xuan, Vice President of Viet Nam, to attend the 2022 Global Summit of Women. Both sides agreed to promote regular exchange of high-level visits between the two countries in order to maintain the positive momentum of bilateral relations, and also agreed to promote more bilateral trade and investment, as well as closer cooperation on labour issue.

On 4 July 2022, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Don had a bilateral meeting with His Excellency Mr. Saluemxay Kommasith, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Lao PDR. Both sides were pleased with a successful official visit to Thailand by His Excellency Mr. Phankham Viphavanh, Prime Minister of the Lao PDR, on 1 -2 June 2022, during which the two countries opened a new chapter of bilateral relations by elevating the ties to strategic partnership. Both sides will coordinate closely to quickly implement agreements made at the leaders level, especially infrastructure connectivity development, facilitation of cross-border transportation of goods, and collaboration to achieve resilient and sustainable economic recovery of the two countries. Both sides also discussed regional issues of common interest, particularly the situation in Myanmar, which Thailand and the Lao PDR are neighbours and have a common interest in peace and stability in Myanmar.

During the bilateral meeting between the Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister and His Excellency Mr. Prak Sokhonn, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Cambodia, both sides agreed to promote regular exchange of high-level visits to maintain positive momentum of bilateral relations and advance cooperation that are beneficial to the peoples of both countries. They also exchanged views about the situation in Myanmar in light of His Excellency Prak Sokhonn’s second visit to Myanmar in his capacity as the Special Envoy of ASEAN Chair on Myanmar. The Thai side reaffirmed the strong support for the efforts of Cambodia as ASEAN Chair and will work closely with Cambodia to advance the ASEAN process on Myanmar. Thailand and Cambodia will also work closely to promote ASEAN solidarity, which is vital for ASEAN’s continued positive contribution to the maintenance of peace and stability in the region.

During the bilateral meeting with His Excellency U Wunna Maung Lwin, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Myanmar, the Thai side emphasised the imperative of close cooperation between Thailand and Myanmar to quickly return peace and stability to the border areas along the Thailand – Myanmar border. Both sides also discussed ways to further advance the ASEAN process on Myanmar, modalities for effective delivery of humanitarian assistance to the people of Myanmar, and cooperation in the area of public health, which Thailand stands ready to do more to help the people of Myanmar.
