On 19 November 2021, the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Shanghai, in collaboration with the Dusit Thani Wellness Resort Suzhou, organized the Loy Krathong night with the theme “Tie Our Two Hearts with Tides” for the very first time. Around 100 participants continuously came to join the event including representatives of the Foreign Affairs Office of Suzhou Municipal People’s Government  and Suzhou Municipal Bureau of Culture, Radio, Television and Tourism, Chinese business friends, Chinese and foreign friends of Thailand, and Thais residing in the consular area.

In her opening remarks, the Thai Consul-General in Shanghai, Ms. Lada Phumas introduced the origin and objectives of the Loy Krathong festival and the profound meaning of the theme “Tie Our Two Hearts with Tides”. The theme refers to the tides of river in the 12th full moon of the Thai Lunar Calendar that ties the hearts of peoples of two countries together, which is indeed significant in strengthening Thailand - China relations. In this regard, Consul-General Lada also shared latest information on entering Thailand and the success of the Investment Promotion Roundtable that was held by the Royal Thai Consulate-General in the afternoon of the same day.

Mr. Li Wenhui, Deputy Director-General of the Foreign Affairs Office of Suzhou Municipal People’s Government, expressed his admiration for the event and its heart-tounched theme. Suzhou has bounded with rivers for a long time and the festival will bring a great blessing for Suzhou and the people. Mr. Li reflected Suzhou Municipal People’s Government’s readiness to continue support the Consulate-General’s activities in further promoting cooperation between Thailand and Suzhou.

On this special occasion, the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Shanghai also provided Thai food and dessert in refined canapés as well as exclusive Thai dance “Rum Loy Krathong” performance. Even more special for participants to learn the step by step of making a krathong by using  banana leaves and flowers demonstated and elaborated by Ms. Phumas herself. Her heart-made krathong was handed over to Mr. Li and Mr. Wang Rudong, Division Chief of International Exchange and Cooperation Division of Suzhou Municipal Bureau of Culture, Radio, Television and Tourism. Afterwards, Consul-General Lada brought all fans to the riverside for floating krathongs and making best wishes while all were also enjoying the traditional Thai Dance “Rum Wong Loy Krathong” together.

The event was a great success to allow friends and fans of Thailand to experience the atmosphere of a joyful, festive and family-like warm Loy Krathong festival. This also created an embracing memory about Thailand in our fans’ heart. Our Chinese friends cannot bear to their love and missing for Thailand while Thiland is ready to welcome them coming back in line with Thailand’s policies on Reopening.
