On 11 February 2026, Mrs. Urasa Mongkolnavin, Director-General of the Department of South Asian, Middle East and African Affairs, held a bilateral meeting with Ambassador Amr Mohsen Hamza, Assistant Foreign Minister for Asian Affairs of the Arab Republic of Egypt, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Egypt.

Both sides expressed appreciation for the cordial relations between Thailand and Egypt, which have spanned over 70 years. They reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation in various areas, particularly in economic, trade and investment, which will serve as key pillars of bilateral cooperation in the years ahead.

The two sides also underscored the importance of promoting high-level exchanges and strengthening people-to-people connectivity. In this regard, they discussed the resumption of direct flights between Bangkok and Cairo to stimulate trade, investment and tourism, as well as to promote business and cultural exchanges.

The Thai side reiterated its commitment to advancing Thailand’s Economic Diplomacy to create business opportunities and explore new markets, particularly in Africa. Egypt was recognised as a high potential as a “Gateway to Africa,” given its strategic geographic location and membership in key regional trade and economic frameworks, including the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and other trade agreements.

The Director-General also highlighted Thailand’s policy on Thailand-Africa Initiative (TAI), emphasizing Egypt’s potential role as a base for Thai investment and as a distribution hub for Thai products into the African market. Both sides discussed enhancing trilateral cooperation to leverage the respective strengths of Thailand and Egypt to undertake development cooperation projects in third countries across Africa.

On the same day, the Director-General also met with the executives of the Egyptian Council for Foreign Affairs (ECFA), a well-known and widely recognized foreign policy think tank of Egypt. The two sides exchanged views on key regional and global developments, as well as important issues of mutual interest.

Thailand and Egypt established diplomatic relations on 27 September 1954, with Egypt being the first Arab country to establish diplomatic ties with Thailand. Both countries remain committed to further strengthening their dynamic relations, particularly in the areas of economic, trade, investment, and development cooperation within the framework of the Thailand-Africa Initiative.
