On 23-25 February 2025, His Excellency Mr. Maris Sangiampongsa, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand, paid his first official visit to the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam at the invitation of His Excellency Mr. Bui Thanh Son, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam.

During the visit, the Thai Foreign Minister paid a courtesy call on H.E. Mr. Pham Minh Chinh, Prime Minister of Viet Nam, and had a productive discussion with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening the Thailand-Viet Nam Strengthened Strategic Partnership across all dimensions. They also laid the groundwork for elevating Thailand-Viet Nam relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in preparation for the upcoming Official Visit to Viet Nam by H.E. Ms. Paetongtarn Shinawatra, Prime Minister of Thailand, in conjunction with the 4th Joint Cabinet Retreat (JCR).

On political and security cooperation, both sides agreed to strengthen high-level exchanges, consultations, and collaboration between their armed forces and security agencies. They committed to jointly addressing transboundary challenges, particularly narcotics, online scams, and shared water resource management, through bilateral and Mekong cooperation mechanisms.

On economic cooperation, both sides emphasised advancing sustainable economic growth. They noted the increasing balance in bilateral trade and reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing trade facilitation and promotion to achieve the target of 25 billion USD. The Vietnamese side expressed appreciation for Thai investments in Viet Nam and pledged continued support, while the Thai side encouraged increased Vietnamese investment in Thailand.

Both sides agreed to develop a plan of action to implement the "Three Connects" Strategy, to connect the two countries’ supply chains, local economies, and sustainable growth strategies. The plan will prioritise strategic industries, including logistics, petrochemicals, renewable energy, banking, and retail.

On people-to-people cooperation, both sides committed to strengthening partnerships in tourism, culture, and education. They agreed to attract more international tourists through the "Six Countries, One Destination" (6C1D) initiative and explore joint projects such as increasing flight connections and cruise tourism among Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, and Viet Nam. Additionally, they supported expanding cultural and educational exchanges and promoting Thai and Vietnamese language studies at each other’s universities to foster mutual understanding among young people.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to close collaboration in regional and sub-regional frameworks, particularly under Mekong cooperation mechanisms and ASEAN, to address transnational challenges and promote shared prosperity.

The Thai Foreign Minister also engaged with representatives of the Thai Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ThaiCham) in Viet Nam to explore ways to strengthen business connections between Thailand and Viet Nam.
